The great Sarod player Buddhadev Das Gupta passed away yesterday. May he rest in peace. He was a very prominent heir to the great tradition of his guru Radhika Mohan Maitra and a true representative of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana. He was also an excellent teacher and left behind many outstanding disciples on both the Sarod and the Sitar. I saw him in the 1990s and the early 2000s quite a couple of times in concert. Always very impressive.
There are many CDs available by him. Quite a number of them can be obtained from info@raga-maqam-dastgah.com.
About the artist see:
Koti Koti Namashkaar, may his soul rest in peace. Such a great loss.
ReplyDeleteAn electrical engineer by training and a graduate of century old Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta, Buddhadev Dasgupta held high ranks in a premier utility company of that city for a long time and yet managed to attain very high standards in playing of the sarod through sheer dedication.
ReplyDeleteHis passing has brought the pre-digital era of the great masters to near extinction. A great loss indeed. RIP.
Sad to learn of the passing of this great artist, also greatful for the many hours of beauty he treated us to.
ReplyDeleteI have just learned now of his passing....a master in his special gharana whose playing was unique and transcendent...I was fortunate to be in his presence at a number of recitals over the years and am ever grateful for those experiences...
ReplyDeleteI had not visited your blog for several months. I want to thank you for the treasure trove of dhrupad that you have posted since the first of the year. Truly an embarrassment of riches.
ReplyDeletePerhaps one day you will be moved to post as many instrumental dhrupad albums. That would be an even greater feast for this visitor. Of course, to your great credit, you have already posted many such recordings over the years, but one always thirsts for more of the music one loves.
A thousand thanks!
