But after a couple of years of occasional listening to these recordings finally one day something clicked, a door opened up and all of a sudden I started to understand this music and its greatness. Since then I'm fascinated. So be patient and don't give up. Anyway, to try to understand this music - as all oriental music - by the mind does not work. Something has to click.
Tawfiqhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00332824027946814674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5951570112842053779.post-41981582242184984152012-08-18T17:39:16.263+02:002012-08-18T17:39:16.263+02:00Here's a follow-up "thank you", now ...Here's a follow-up "thank you", now that I've been listening to these! First, I understand Ted Levin's dislike of these: I've become used to single-instrument or small-group performances, this sound is very different - blurry at the edges, fatter - like the difference between hearing a group play an acoustic set vs their normal electric set; or like a whole orchestra playing something you know as a string quartet. It takes a bit of getting used to.

Second, I am struggling to get any sense of long-range SHAPE in these performances! It was hard to get to grips with 8-minute solos (where's the beginning-middle-end...?) but now there are lots of layers of difficulty - what defines the various sections within one track? Are the transitions between tracks also the transitions between 'sections' ('movements'?) of the piece, like in a western symphony? What shapes the music over the hour or two a full Maqam lasts? It will come I'm sure; but the early stages are rather like standing under a shower for 2 hours - the sound doesn't change much, the flow shifts from time to time, but after a while you sort of forget how long it's been going on, and (perhaps) begin to lose the enjoyment of it! I'm still working at it.

Despite that, it's wonderful to have the opportunity to engage with somethign as vast as the 10-hour 6-maqam cycle: THANK YOU again !!!!

DavidDavidnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5951570112842053779.post-5881761327800497482012-07-07T19:42:07.651+02:002012-07-07T19:42:07.651+02:00Thanks for this post, very good ! I would like to bring to your attention that the files in the Shashmaqom collection carry incorrect ID3 tags. I don't know what you can do about it, since it takes a lot of effort to correct the information in the ID3 tags for each track (and then having to upload it all over again is not a small task!). But just wanted to inform you...

Regards,

Varun.Varun N. One thing though, about the re-posts that you're so adamantly reupping again:
Would you consider re-posting these on your blog as live 'hot' links instead of just mentioning the posts that you've already reupped? This would make it a lot easier for users to revert back with speed and ease to whatever posts or downloads they're about to use, and a load better than searching the blog for them which sometimes gives you zero results.

Thanks, and keep it up good friend.

H.H.Hammerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09462766826817071023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5951570112842053779.post-37711217688314165502012-03-29T07:57:37.079+02:002012-03-29T07:57:37.079+02:00omg, wow, this is really cool!!
